Windowless samplers are designed for taking disturbed,
continuous soil samples from depths up to 10 metres. They are generally
used for environmental investigation of contaminated land.
The samplers are driven with a Sliding Hammer or pupose-designed Soil
Sampling Rig. Breaker hammers are usually not suitable for driving these
samplers as they do not impart a sufficiently high force per blow for
efficient driving.
Windowless samplers are manufactured from high tensile cold-drawn
seamless steel tubes complete with a heat-treated replaceable Cutting
Shoe. A Plastic Liner is inserted into the sampler tube and
this is kept in place by a Retaining Ring. As an option for
sampling in very looose ground a Basket Retainer may be used
instead of the Retaining Ring.
After driving and extracting the sampler from the ground, the cutting
shoe and retaining ring is removed and the plastic liner is extracted
together with the enclosed soil sample. Plastic end caps may be
used to enclose the soil sample and the depth horizon is marked on each
end of plastic liner with an indelible marker. Use of plastic liners
enables samples to be removed quickly and reduces the risk of
cross-contamination between successive samples.
The sample tubes are available in a nested series of diameters, enabling
continuous soil samples to be obtained. Smaller diameter samplers are used
with increasing depth.
Connection at the top end of the sampler is 1.1/2" B.S. Whitworth
female. We recommend our standard 1-metre long SPT Rods for driving the
samplers as these are extremely rugged and resistant to breakage. However,
adaptors can be supplied to connect our window samplers to other types of
drive rod if required.
