SPT Split Tube Sampler

For carrying out the Standard Penetration Test. Manufactured to BS 1377: Part 9: 1990, consisting of Top Adaptor, pair of Split Spoons, and open SPT Shoe. As an option the sampler may also be provided with a Basket Retainer made from plastic or steel.

The Top Adaptor contains a ball valve held in place by a threaded brass seat. This is to prevent the sample being washed away when the sampler is withdrawn from the borehole. The thread connection on the top adaptor depends on the type of drill rods being used to drive the sampler, but is most frequently 1.1/2" B.S. Whitworth, BW Rod or AW Rod.

The split spoon is manufactured from high tensile alloy steel tube. The shoe is case hardened and tempered to give optimum wear resistance.

Also available for tests in gravels and gravelly sand is a Solid Nose Cone, which has a 60° point replaces the standard open SPT shoe. Alternatively, the entire Split Tube Sampler may be replaced with the Long Solid Rod, also with a soild point. The results of tests using these tools should be reported with the preface SPT(C).

The standard Split Tube Sampler is 2" (50.8 mm) OD x 1.3/8" (34.9 mm )ID x 24" (610 mm) long. Other diameters are available to order. Split tube samplers can also be supplied in Stainless Steel or with Clear Plastic Liners.
